Ernie : Actually I did read that part. Think I over-simplified my comments, though. At least the impression I got was that she seemed to say that one standard is professional, the other "whatever comes in." Then it is up to the pros to do the fact checking and correct grammar and the like. My point is that the pros won't have much incentive to act as editors and it is far better to cultivate a network of at least semi-pro "stringers" who , with a break or two, could become FT journalists themselves because of the merits of their work. Sure, if the HPost get a major grant to hire a staff of editors to service stringers, that would be different. But for how long ? Only until the grant runs out. Then what ? Business as usual. Better to start with a sustainable model. Mostly I favor scholars for the purpose, who could be grad students. Or aspiring writers who want a good outlet for their writing.in order to build up a resume. I'm skeptical about those inside actually having willingness to act as mentors to stringers Most journalists, it has been my experience, are hyper protective of their sinecures . Hence I look at Arianna's proposal as more wishful thinking than otherwise. Hence -my bias is showing- a preference for teachers, since teachers are conditioned to be talent scouts. Finding new talent is a virtue for teachers in ways that are alien to most others. IMHO, anyway.
