Title: "Free speech is meant to protect unpopular speech
I am currently feeling that we have to deal with what we have. No centrist party came about for 2008, despite much talk here and elsewhere about one. I was actually looking forward to one, given the choices of McBackstabber and Oshit. So I'm not so sure that one is going to crop up now, and if a new party does crop up, it will likely be from the Tea Parties (citing the NBC/WSJ poll that came out today). Those folks are more economic libertarian than anything else, but they currently out poll both major parties. As Dr. Glenn Reynolds wrote today, It's because they haven't screwed anyone over, and the other two have.

Assuming that nothing comes of that, we are still left with defensive "lesser of evils" voting between the Democratic and Republican parties. Given those choices, it really is impossible for me to support the Ds. So I may come across as a Republican cheerleader, simply because I have no other choice.

I case you haven't noticed, Radical Centrism is about,  at least partly about,
tossing brickbats at BOTH major political parties. RC is anything but
a branch of the GOP and is anything but a branch of the DNC, either.

I sound like the channel I hate the most , MSNBC ?  How does that figure?
I just said that here in Oregon I usually vote Republican.

Not with the least enthusiasm , but nonetheless......

Granted, I often make negative comments about Democrats, but
this should never ( as in "NEVER" ) be interpreted as somehow an
endorsement of the Republican Party.

Everything is strictly case by case, and this does mean a lot of
brickbats for both Dems and Reps. About which, with a few exceptions
here and there, BOTH make me sick most of the time.

I do not mean that the Dems really make me sick a LOT, and the
Republicans make me sick only an itty bitty bit, I mean that each party
while their sins tend to be different, are approximately just as
evil, warped, unwholesome, criminal, irresponsible, and diseased.

Yes, I can rattle off the failings of the Democrats with ease, and often do just that,
during which times I guess you could say I sound like Fox TV, but at other times
I see fit to chastise the GOP since they are about equally bad, and my interest
in their success is also close to zero.

I really ( really, really ) don't like either major party. Both, IMHO, are full of poop.
As an Independent you cannot possibly expect me to only criticize the Dems
and let the Reps off the hook. There is no chance of that at all.

Thought we covered this ground a long time ago. Guess you forgot.

When I started voting at the age of 18, Texas was a one-party Democratic state. While the country was going through Watergate, we in Texas were being treated to tales about the Sharpstown bank of Houston, and how many state representatives and senators it owned, not to mention the Governor and the Lt. Governor. All of them Democrats, of course. This caused the defeat of most statewide Democratic officials in the Democratic primaries, and great distaste for Democrats statewide and the Republicans started their ascendancy while nationwide they were on their downhill slide from the Nixon years. They "arrived" by winning the Governorship in 1978, the first Republican governor for Texas in 102 years. The elections of 1998 gave the Republicans the state house and senate as well as the Governorship for the first time since 1876.

On the Republicans, you sound like MSNBC (maybe that's an overstatement, I might have to go with CNN). At least you're dissing the Democrats as well, unlike MSNBC (and CNN). If by intellectually unswift (new word, just made it up), you mean academia, academia has given tenure to Ward Churchill, Norm Chomsky, and last but certainly not least, the Climate Fraudsters. If that's what it takes to be swift intellectually, then I would rather not be so. Their pedigree of Socialists, Marxists, and outright nutjobs is not, to me anyway, something to emulate.

So what would make the Republican Party more intellectually swift, in your opinion?

I can't respond to your points about Texas politics. I simply don't know
much at all about what is going on in your state .  Here in Oregon I usually
vote Republican since the state Democratic Party is Berkeley North.
Other places I have lived its been the other way, where the Republicans
have been neo-Neanderthal.

What I was trying to say in my metaphors is simply that the Democrats
at the national level are really crazy and the Republicans are none-too-swift intellectually.
Its not my idea of a choice. :-(

This is the candidates, not necessarily staff. Some staff have been whiz bangs,
Stephanopoulos and Rove, for example. Very smart, each of them, MUCH
smarter than their bosses. Or you could say that Stephanopoulos was sane
and Clinton was crazy, Rove was a brain and W was the anti-brain.

My opinion, anyway

I see your points on left and right reversed. The left is brain dead and the right is brain damaged. To me, the left is more reactionary than the right. At least here lately.

I cannot identify with the neo-Marxist Democratic Party and the Chicago style of politics in DC. All of that seems tied together with a not-so-nice little bow on top of it. There are some Republicans that I find appealing. There are most (95 %?) Democrats that I find appalling. Texas Democrats could have been going somewhere in 2010. They might have even been able to win back the Texas House.

But then we had Texas Democratic Congressmen refusing to have "Townhall" meetings during the August recess, turning down individual and group invitations to 50,000 watt flame thrower AM stations, and generally being unreachable by their constituents. That's supposed to help them with the voters down here?? Oh yeah, that'll work. NOT.

In the meantime, there has been a party switcher in the Texas House from east Texas who went from D to R. The Democrats in Texas may avoid a massacre, but the national party is not helping. Not. One. Bit.

And Chet Edwards of Waco (D and alleged Blue Dog), might find that his opponent will refer to him as one of "Pelosi's puppies." That will not go over in Waco or Bryan-College Station.

Mostly a good article / essay. You can guess the points where I disagree, but
let me deal with your insight about this "conservative:" who is, for sure,
more of a Radical Centrist than otherwise   --even if he is unfamiliar with
the concept.  Although IF this is true, you are hereby commissioned
to evangelize him for our Most Noble Cause.

Come to think of it, the mainstream figures who most resemble RC-ists
are often conservatives. Christina Hoff Sommers, for example, or
Kevin Philips, or Charles Krauthammer, real brains and
unclassifiable in most respects.

Unfortunately, how does one identify with the Republican Party ?
I surely cannot do so. Which, as you are well aware, is anything but
an endorsement of the Democrats.

To put it in such terms, speaking of the top of the ticket in all past elections
( setting aside 2008 since it is still a touchy subject and since the candidates
last year were atypical in many ways ) since 1964,  we have been presented
with one Hobson's choice after another. To go way over the top in any literal
sense, but to make a point, we have been able to vote Left for a brain damaged
candidate, or vote Right for a brain dead candidate. WTH is this  ? ? ?

But speaking just of Republicans, even granting that the Democrats may sometimes
be worse, and taking note of de facto RC-ists in GOP ranks, how does one vote
for really sleazy characters at the top of the ticket, or no better than wimps,
plus some lower down in the pecking order who are equally bad ?

THIS is where de facto RC-ists have gravitated ?  How does that make sense ?

Thoughts for you reflection.

A very nice, implicitly Radical Centrist screed from our unofficial chaplain at Apple Christian Fellowhip, Dr. Charlie Self. He would probably consider himself a conservative, but he's not your typical partisan...

Peacemaking is our theme. Howard Dean, capitalism is not the enemy and socialism is no solution. Sean Hannity, repeating conservative mantras will not move us forward either. Wealth creation moderated by sound ethics and governmental policies is the way forward. Private initiative must be primary - in business and charity, with governmental help when needed.
