Ernie: Hitler not only was influenced by Mussolini in some secondary way, he deliberately patterned his movement after the Fascists of Italy. The reason Hitler ended up in prison where he eventually wrote Mein Kampf , was because of his attempted putsch modeled after the Fascist takeover in Italy. Not only that, but the two ( AH & BM ) were in contact many times in the era, at first with Adolf as the junior partner, then the other way around. I grant you, for sure, that the NSDAP added a number of features like anti-Semitism ( as you point out ), and became utterly ruthless and amoral, but in each case the start was a form of nationalistic socialism which, however, was soon transcended ( for want of a better word ) by major deals made with big business and the traditional Right. The strictly socialist elements of both were pretty much down the drain before the end of the 1930s. The socialist part of Nazism, the Strassers and their followers, ended up with death ( Night of Long Knives ) for Gregor and with Otto in Canada leading a small faction of Nazis now drummed out of the party who set out upon a separate course, My take, anyway.
