Hi Matteo,

That’s some interesting questions.

>What’s the best method? Modify the crush map via ceph CLI or via text editor?
Others might have different experience, but IMO the best way is using the “osd
crush location hook = /path/to/script” (See
http://docs.ceph.com/docs/master/rados/operations/crush-map/). It allows you to
make a script deciding where to place that OSD in the CRUSHmap.

>Will the modification to the crush map be persistent across reboots and

If you modify the crushmap via CLI or text editor, “osd crush update on start =
true” can rollback your changes on reboot or OSD restart.

Consider that “ceph status” returns the total available/used space, so you need
to monitor the space usage for HDDs and SSDs separately (ceph osd df tree).

Shameless plug: I wrote an article about this a couple of months ago:
http://www.root314.com/2017/01/15/Ceph-storage-tiers/ hope it helps.

Cheers,
Maxime

Subject: [ceph-users] Mix HDDs and SSDs togheter

Hi all,

Does anyone run a production cluster with a modified crush map for create two
pools belonging one to HDDs and one to SSDs.
What’s the best method? Modify the crush map via ceph CLI or via text editor?
Will the modification to the crush map be persistent across reboots and
maintenance operations?
There’s something to consider when doing upgrades or other operations or
different by having “original” crush map?

Thank you
Matteo
