The current LTS kernel is 4.14 which is no way less stable than 3.16, especially when used with cephfs. But to answer your question: we are using both FUSE and more recent kernels. In general, the FUSE client will always be better (for some metrics like features and relability) than the kernel client - but slower and consume more CPU.
