Hi,

I hope that this is not too far off topic, but I feel strongly enough about
that I had to send this note to the list. I am not normally one to make this
sort of request, generally I have a fairly strong rule against this sort of
thing. However what happened just before the holidays made me break it. In a
nutshell a person I know who runs a ferret rescue and shelter up in New
Jersey was faced with a major emergency just before Christmas. She was
contacted by the local humane society to help deal with an emergency rescue
of 102 ferrets, many of whom were sick, very dirty and all were quite
scared. Wendy and I sent a donation of money. If you can help please do.

For more details, here's the URL that explains the situation and a copy of
the email I received.

thank you,

larry

FYI I went to pick up the ferrets from TJ's Ferret Haven today, after Mr.
Mason died yesterday, leaving 102 ferrets without a home.

Here is a copied post I sent to another list....

that sucked so bad. those ferrets were in absolutely disgusting, neglected
condition that I broke down and CRIED right in front of all the shelter
workers and Lisa.

It was the worst feeling in the world to be only able to take as many as we
did, and leave the others behind. Not that I don't think that Anne will
bust ass and take excellent care of them because I do, but just because I
felt I was letting them down somehow. It was heartwrenching, especially
with the old, scared, and sick ones. This man, Rollen Mason, .... I dont
like to speak ill of the dead, but he's lucky in a sense, as the shelter
girls there assured me that he'd be facing some hefty charges of animal
cruelty and neglect if he was not.

We saw everything from RAGING heat, testicular cancer, adrenal, insulinoma,
cataracts, chewed ears, torn off nails, FILTHY, filthy ferrets, and just the
saddest, most shocked and dazed looking 3 rooms (yes 3 rooms) of ferrets
i've ever had the displeasure of witnessing. It was nauseating.

We were only able to take 15, since 11 of them are whole hobs (7 in rut)
that could only fit in one per carrier. We took the whole lot straight to
the vet for treatment, since one of the boys is in a bad way, and one of the
girls vulvas was the size of a large grape, and oozing profusely. She was
treated with antibiotics and will be getting an HCG shot next week, since
the vet was oddly OUT of it right now. Her gum color is fine, and otherwise
she seems healthy and perky. She's under a year old, probably her first
heat. 2 of the girls are pregnant.

Im still shocked. Stan is on his way over to help me modify some of my
larger cages into multiple smaller cages for the boys, since some are okay
together, but others are on a serious hump mission. The girls are all
together, and seem quite content to have a nice clean cage with food, water
and carpeting, as well as some toys and friends to play with. The old, old
hob is in with them, as he is no threat to them now, since he is at least 7,
and his little nugs are so riddled with tumors and small, I don't think he
can do much harm. Not to mention he is so weak he can barely move.

I know Anne will need help, supplies and everything imaginable for 87
ferrets. I don't envy her. I know I'm in need of a lot of things too. If
you're in a position to give, I could use these things:

15 Fer Vac Vaccines (yes, i have some here, but remember that i already have
40 ferrets here)

WOOD STOVE PELLETS!!

Spay/neuter donations

Bedding

Carpet Samples

FOOD (any kind, barring deli cat and meow mix...these kids are just HUNGRY)

Nupro Supplement

HCG if anyone has a spare bottle or dosage so I can give this little girl a
shot now rather than waiting until Tuesday

Small litterpans

Screw on small sized chrome drip cups or whatever locks on for under the
water bottle and is cheap

Litterpan clips (these kids are MESSY)

Some patience

Another amazing friend like Lisa, who I can never, ever thank enough for all
the support, physical manual labor, laughs, and friendship that she gives me
everyday. If I didn't have her, I would be in a fetal position right now
rocking back and forth in the bathtub crying. You're the best Lisa. (oh
and for those of you who don't know, Stan's neighbor's house burned down and
in addition to the 11 ferrets of mine that she took home tonight, she also
has a horny young dog at her house trying to 'get it on' with her 2 dogs).

Thanks for all the help guys. These ferrets won't be going anywhere until I
have them spayed or neutered (I'm getting a break from Dr. Kim up in North
jersey, where Yvonne DeCarlo works, but it is still going to be expensive
simply due to the large number that I have needing to be done)... not to
mention today's vet bill which I dont even want to think about for just
checking them over.

Hugs...I'm going to get Stan now and them just try and relax. Today sucked.
