I think there's no doubt that wages aren't what they are a year ago; neither
are the stocks of the companies paying those wages! However, I view this as
a temporary blip, while the excesses of the past few dot-com years are
purged. The fundamentals remain unchanged: the new economy is driven by
software. Shakeouts of this kind are common in ALL industries. The one thing
that is always the same: the best survive and may even prosper. The best
strategy for times like this is simple: improve your skills. Become a better
programmer, learn what makes projects succeed and what makes them fail. Too
often, though, people don't use shakeouts as an opportunity. It's the analog
of the stock market: we know we should buy low and sell high, but people
usually do just the opposite. IMO, this is learnin' time...
