Sounds like Planetfall
(http://infocom.elsewhere.org/scheyen/planetfall.html), one of the old
Infocom games. I played most all their games, starting at MIT in 1977
playing Zork on the old PDP-11 systems in the AI labs.

If you have a sudden need to play the game (or any of the other old
Infocom games), check out this site (http://infocom.elsewhere.org/).
You can play them online via Telnet...very cool.

Oh, oh .. does anyone remember those games where you were this loser
janitor in space? I can't remember them for the life of me, though I
know I should, since I spent more than a few hours playing them ...

geez .. I need a life ..
