Michael,

<--- chief cook and bottle washer, floor sweeper, garbage collector and
birdie feeder. Oh. Let's not forget about the baking of Gel's muffins. :)

No, seriously, my partner and I have a good system worked out.

He does the books, maintains a couple of sites, does all accounts payable
and receivable and does some marketing. Also, if we get a project and we
both have the time, we'll work on it together to get it done. I handle some
marketing as well, maintaining customer relationships, looking for new
opportunities as well as keeping my skills sharp and learning new things. I
also maintain our personal websites, a few non-profit freebie sites, set up
email accounts, ftp accounts, etc, and troubleshoot any software or hardware
problems.

Since we are just a small, growing company, we try to keep most of the work
in-house. I come from a graphics background as well, so I always do the look
and feel, and then the backend as well if I have the time.

If I don't, we have different consultants that we contract the work to. A
DBA/VB programmer, 2 CF programmers and an ASP programmer. It took a while
to find them but they do really good work. We also have an IT person we can
count on in a crunch.

I also finally found a fantastic graphics guy who now does most of the
artwork. He is very fluent in HTML and I have also just taught him the
ins-and-outs of basic ColdFusion, so when he's laying out pages, he's got
our best interests at heart.

Our number one rule though, below having fun with what we do, is
COMMUNICATION. And I don't care how trivial it is, if it's a problem or even
if it's something good, the communication between your team members and your
customers is key. Without it, forget it. We maintain very close contacts
with all of our customers and consultants and we are always accessible by
phone for anything.

Overall, I probably stretch myself a little thin, but I'm a Virgo and I like
things to be perfect, and I like to keep an eye on everything, so I don't
always accomplish what's on my list in a given day.

Hope that sheds some light,

Erika

"There are two great rules of life, the one general and the other
particular. The first is that everyone can, in the end, get what he wants if
he only tries. This is the general rule. The particular rule is that every
individual is more or less an exception to the general rule." - Samuel

Subject: Roles

I am just kinda curious what type of different roles people here play. Do
you do the programming, web layout, system admin, db admin, managers...or
are the functions split up, that kinda of stuff.
I am just trying to learn different ways people have their group/team.
Trying to get the most out of people without stretching them to thin....

Me, I do everything which in my mind is too much...I'd like someone to
handle the content and someone else handle the db admin...so I can focus on
the apps themselves.......

Whats your team like?
