Macromedia endows bundled products with
server-side power
By James Karney
Macromedia is staking out a claim in a strategic
market space that
Microsofts .Net initiative seems to have
overlookedgraphically oriented
Web developers and their allies. You know, the
people who make pretty
pages, favor JavaScript over C-Sharp or Visual
Basic, and demand
clean, totally cross-browser Web sites that are
compatible with multiple
platforms. It also includes their clients, ad
agencies, training and
education providers, partners with big names like
IBM, and even TV
producers. The company is doing some
outside-the-box thinking that
extends its reach beyond the traditional Web
development community
and into the realm of next-Web convergence.
Best known for its Web page and image authoring
tools, Macromedia has
added server components to its arsenal [see More
than Eye Candy,
Dec. 15, 2000, p. 55], and has beefed up its
customer base to a total of
two million users through a combination of
mergers and licensing
agreements. Most recent was the acquisition of
Allaire, finalized in March,
which brings ColdFusion and JRun into its product
line-upback-end
offerings that complement its primary graphics
and page authoring
businesses.
