I used to work in the disk drive industry - it's even worse than the dot.com
world. I've been thru layoffs of over 8000 people at one time, 2 Chapter
11's, and 1 Chapter 7. During one layoff, myself and friend were the only 2
left out of a department of more than 50. We helped pack up our managers,
their managers, and a VP or 2. We spent the next 3 months sitting in a VPs
office, looking out the window, listening to the radio.
The guilty feeling is very common. On the other side, if you're the one
layed off, you question your self-worth. Usually the one's that get laid
off do a little better, because know the uncertaintity is over - they know
what they have to go do. The one's that remain have to deal with the daily
uncertainty of the collapsing company. If you're one of the one's that's
not layed off, and later the company has more lay-offs, it's more difficult
for you to find a job because of the flood of people already out there.
Having been thru it, all I can say is keep your resume out there and start
looking thru the online job boards. No one's going to care about you except
you. A misplaced loyalty to some company just isn't worth it.
