I think it's pretty much like most American industries, I'm sure airlines
could maintain their planes better, but that would cut into Profits, I'm
sure car makers could make better quality care (the american makers) but
that would cost them -> us more, Like Chris Rock says, we can fly to the
moon and make materials that can resist the heat of reentry, but Cadillac
can't make a car that the bumper don't fall off!? LOL
Putting EM shielding into Computers would cost more and cut into profits and
make systems more expensive, so the makers and the consumers would rather
just live in bliss, not thinking about it.
On a more espionage track, none of us, I would imagine are safe from TEMPEST
either. Our monitors give out enough EM radiation that devices yards away (I
can't remember the exact distance anymore) can reconstruct what we are
looking at completely. some one across the street right now could be looking
at exactly what I'm doing... Pretty creepy, but since I don't have any
national secrets I'm pretty save, but the tech is out there and anyone can
build it...
strange days.

Yes..that was mentioned in the article as a possible use for these devices.
Hence their range must be considerably more than ten feet.
In general, consider radio frequencies..what's their range? Usually I think
it's pretty far depending on the strength of the emitter.
This IS dangerous. ANd its something that electronics designers seldom take
into consideration.
As far as I know the only planes that are EMI shielded is Airforce One and
perhaps a few other military aircraft.

The question is, what was the radius? If it was 10 feet, I couldn't see this
being useful to a terrorist. If it was 100+ feet... well, that's quite a
large radius. Imagine if something like that was put next to the end of an
airport runway.
