so there is no *choice* in it?
you cannot say i am not a Jew, because you have already been committed to
God by your parents?
i am probably way off here but aren't there 2 parts to being a Jew, that are
completely different.
one is in the blood & through marriage.
the more important aspect is the individuals Real relationship with God.
to study & follow his word.
so the circumcision is just a promise, but may not be followed through by
the individual.

The bris is a sign of a Jew's covenant with G-d -- that is, that G-d has
taken us as His chosen people and we have agreed to follow His commandments.
(There are 613 of them in the Torah, although some commandments apply only
to certain specific people, or can only be done at certain times.)
As long as we follow G-d's commandments, we are richly rewarded; if we
don't, we are punished. (I can explain about this more, if you'd like; it's
really not as simplistic as it sounds.)
Anyway, every Jewish male is brought into the covenant by the Bris
(circumcision.) Jewish women are born into the covenant automatically and
don't need a bris or ritual to become part of it. One explanation that I've
heard: It's because we have a special understanding that we're born with
(called "binah" -- it's a feminine type of wisdom and spirituality) and we
don't need the sign of the circumcision.
A bris is much easier on a newborn baby than it is on an older male, so I've
heard.
