It is a common practice for an employee in the US to give 2-weeks notice of
their departure. It's also a common practice for employers to give
absolutely NO notice. Sometimes an employer will fire you the moment you
give notice, and then you're stuck without a job for two weeks with no pay.
It's a jacked up double-standard and I really wish that the employees of the
world would wake up and realize what's going on here. Especially in
California - an "at-will" state where an employer can fire you with or
without cause and with or without notice. The same respect rarely finds its
way back to an employee that most employees give their employers.
BUT - your situation is different. You're a contractor. You have a set
time when the contract will expire. Your client knows this, and if he/she
hasn't prepared for that day well then they're just plain stupid. HOWEVER
if the client in the meantime approaches you and asks you whether you'll be
renewing and you flat out lie to them, well, Karma is definitely against
you.
If you were to simply work off your contract and then tell the client
thanks, it's been nice working with you but I've got other work, that should
be sufficient, and you should STILL get a good reference. It would be
unconscionable for any client to give you a bad reference just because you
decided not to renew the contract - even if you did't give notice, because
you're not contractually obligated to do so. A contract outlines all the
mutual understandings between two parties. So there shouldn't be any
suprises.
Let your conscious be your guide.
