Personally, I've stuck behind ColdFusion. I used to code in VB, prior to
my web days, then got into ASP before moving over to ColdFusion.
We are all pawns in Bill's game, and I for one do not want to see MS take
over the internet the way it's taken over the Desktop. ColdFusion has had
the strength in the market, compared to the free alternatives (ie, ASP) and
has obviously earned a lot of respect. I can't see it disappearing at all.
And gradually, particularly if linux continues to do well in the server
market, people may continue to switch to CF from ASP because CF is available
on linux.
ColdFusion work, for me at least, seems to be ongoing, so at the moment I
think I'll pass on soap and .net. I also have Java behind me should I need
to look at other avenues.
I've recently made the move to Linux on my desktop machine as well, partly
for licensing reasons (have you seen the upgrade costs for Office XP!!),
partly to see if Linux could do the job. In three weeks I haven't needed
to boot into NT. I do have another NT server here though, not that I've
used it much more than normal, SQL Server mainly). The only time I've had
to reboot my linux machine was when I had to run access... Typically, 5
minutes after booting into NT, the damn thing hung!! So it was back to
linux, and installed Access on the server! Other than that, linux was easy
to install, is quite happy doing CF development, amongst other things, and
rock solid!!!
Back to ColdFusion.... I think ASP was popular because kids at home could
pretty much knock together stuff without having to spend an arm and a leg,
and everyone knew VB. However, I think that .NET and soap is going to make
it a little harder for people to get into, and so it may not quite get the
popularity that ASP had. Who knows... I'm guessing now!!!! :^)
