I think Web Development is still going strong. Web Design, however, is
probably taking hits at the moment. Companies have always preferred
function over 'nice looking'. Sure, visually stunning websites are
nice... but they aren't as necessary. I have nothing against web
designers, I used to be one of them and I still work with them!

Actually, that's pretty much what I was saying. Of course, my not being

pounding the pavement makes my observations a bit removed.
The IT industry still needs people. Recent downturns, whether
attributable
to the dot com crash, or the slowing economy in general, have created a
little slack. If you're an employer, no doubt that's a welcome bit of
news.
The web development end of the IT industry I doubt is fairing nearly as
well, but a lot of those folks have already moved into more traditional
IT
roles with established companies.
