that say thou shalt do this or else... And then try and make it the law.
I like your idea of the program. It sounds almost the same as one a former
employer developed. One of the people wrote a small program that trolled the
web for pornographic sites. Then it stored the URL in a database. The
blocking software checked to see if the site was in the blacklisted database
before allowing access to that site. My part in the project was to write the
app that allowed the review committee to examine each site and to vote
whether it should or should not be banned.
It was a great idea but the implementation and marketing sucked big time. If
there could have been an incompetent approach to selling this thing to the
public and to libraries, they found a way to do it. Case in point, thee was
provision requiring libraries to filter adult sites from child accessible
computers. This program met all the constitutional provisions, while others
like websense and net nanny did not. You would have thought the marketing
people would have been all over the American Library Association and similar
groups getting the word out on this program. Nope not a peep. And that was
typical. If there was a way this company could shoot itself in the foot it
would find it.
There was an unintended consequence to this project. The database itself
after a very short while was probably the largest listing of porn sites in
the world. I wanted to set up a mailing list that would cost about $25 per
year to join, and it would guarantee that you would get a weekly listing of
100 unique sites for your viewing pleasure.
Not only would the company have made money on the blocking software and
database, they would have made even more on the porn list.
Sigh.
