second commandment - "you shall have no Gods before me". Doesn't say that there aren't other spiritual entities that are worshipped, but does say that these entities are not God, the creator of all. And only the creator, the master of reality, the one who created the spiritual and spiritual entities should be worshipped.
On the other hand, he may have been one of those book of J type people who take a radically different view of the Torah and have basically been brushed off by scholars and theologins.
On a third hand (I like hands), there have always been idol worship in the Jewish community. While not 'right', it's always been there and has been condemed throughout time. I can point to a number of friends who are Jewish, stress that they are Jewish and are idol worshippers today. Does't make it right from a Jewish perspective, but....
