I'm sorry Larry,

having just gone through something similar with my dog, I can very much
sympathize.  You did the most humane thing.

As you all know, I have several ferrets as pets.  As of Friday night, I had
one less. Our oldest ferret, Possum - so named because when we first got
her, her marking were very similar to that animal's, died Friday night. She
had been with us almost 6 years. Starting Thursday she suddenly began acting
very lethargic. This is from a ferret who typically was very active, even
for a ferret. I took her to the vet on Friday, and they kept her at the
clinic. On examination the vet felt a small mass in her abdomen. Initially
we had scheduled an exploratory surgery Saturday morning. Possum continued
to decline, so the vet decided to move the surgery up to Friday (a heck of a
way to spend a Friday). After the surgery started, he called me up with the
bad news, Possum had lymphoma (a form of cancer), and it had spread
throughout her intestines. There was nothing that could be done. So we
decided not to let her wake up from the surgery. We'll be picking up her
ashes later this week and placing them beside the others we've lost over the
last year Ryoga and Osmar.
