As much as I want to dislike military leaders on principal, I just like
that man. I think that the most rational and well-spoken political figure
so far in this crisis has been Colin Powell. I probably wouldn't agree with
his stance on many issues but I'd probably vote for him anyway because I
just like that man.

I don't think a woman could win, but I do see a very important reason for
women to run. The first woman to run is not going to win. But as people get
used to the idea of a woman as presidential candidate, the discrimination
in that race will decrease. The first woman wouldn't win, and probably the
second woman wouldn't win either. But after a few elections, a woman would
have a fair chance. I think that's reason enough for good women to run for
president now. Even though they don't have a realistic chance, they create
a realistic chance in the future.

There are many people who still say things like "A woman's place is not in
political office" and "Women should support the beliefs of their husbands,
but not too loudly" and "We shouldn't have a woman president because she'd
just hit 'the button' one day because she has PMS." I've heard those
things. I've even heard those things from women. We still have a long way
to go.

It does sound like they achieved greatness. Six kids. Wow. I can tell you
in seriousness that my 8th grade English teacher gave me skills that saved
my life. If it weren't for her I probably would have killed myself as a
teenager, but she gave me an outlet that made me feel better. There are so
many people who make the world a better place.

I have heard many wonderful things about my own parents, who are both
teachers at LSU. But the best compliment my mother ever received, something
that I aim to do, is "You egg people on to be themselves."
