I disagree with those who say he couldn't win.
First, he is greatly admired across the political spectrum. He is a classic
moderate in that he is neither right nor left, but down the middle, but down
the middle without being squishy. He knows what his principles are. He
carries a mantle of leadership that people could rally around. The vast
majority of Americans fall squarely in the middle if not slightly to the
right of center, which seems to be where Powell is. Also, his personal
story of rising from poverty resonates with all Americans. We're always
looking for another Lincoln.
Second, racism in this country is not what it once was. There are not nearly
the number of hard core racists any where, including the South, that there
once was. They are there, but rarely heard from and not much of a political
force. Probably, the majority of Americans are more racists than they would
care to admit. Many of these closet racists, I believe would vote for
Powell. Frankly -- and some people are going to blast me for this -- many of
these-pure-bred white types are in the GOP and I believe their racisms is
such that they would vote for Powell as the Republican nominee before they
would cross party lines.
But who would cross party lines in droves to vote for Powell would be all of
the minorities who are registered Democrat.
The biggest hurdle for Powell, I believe is that he's pro-choice in the
anti-abortion party. He would not likely have the war chest GWB had, which
helped him overcome his own pro-choice position (along with the fact that
there were no credible anti-abortion candidates in the primaries).
I also agree that Hillary Clinton has a good shot at the presidency some
day.
