Think about what evidence you have for claiming that bin Laden is guilty.
At this point, we haven't been given any information that shows that he
knew about the attack ahead of time. In fact, we haven't been given much
information. We have been told "He is our prime suspect" and "The evidence
points to him" and other statements that claim that he is guilty without
actually telling us what the evidence is. We have been told that at least
one of the terrorists was "an associate" of bin Laden's, that several
others were living in a "bin Laden safehouse" in Germany. We've been told
that they intercepted communications to bin Laden after the WTC that said
"We've taken out the World Trade Center." Assuming that these things are
true (we haven't seen the evidence), that doesn't mean that he necessarily
knew ahead of time what these people had planned.

I am an associate of 'Gel's. Does that mean that I know what he's doing at
work this month? No. If I let my friend use my computer while I'm out of
the country, does that mean that I know which websites he will be visiting
while I'm gone? No. Nor does it mean that I told him which websites to
visit. If I call my muffin-loving friend to say "I just made some fabulous
muffins" does that mean that my friend helped me make the muffins? No.

But bin Laden is an easy scapegoat. It really doesn't take much to say
"this guy who is guilty of similar crimes is our main suspect for this
crime." Well, of course he is. He's guilty of similar crimes. If you have
your choice of someone who is guilty of similar crimes or an entire
population of people who aren't guilty of similar crimes, where will the
focus of your investigation be? But to be honest, crimes that are how
similar? When was the last time somebody hijacked passenger jets and flew
them into sky-scrapers?

People are taking it on faith that bin Laden is guilty. Maybe he is. I
don't know. I haven't seen any evidence that says for sure that he was
involved. In fact, I haven't actually seen any evidence. We've been told
that all of the evidence points to him, but all of what evidence? We
haven't seen any evidence. We've been told that evidence exists but we
haven't even been told what that evidence is.

From what I understand, the Oklahoma City bombing was blamed on bin Laden
until the evidence proved that wrong. Could we at least learn from that and
reserve judgement until the evidence has been compiled and examined and
made public?
