Also remember that an insanity plea isn't a walk in the park.  When somebody
declared legally/criminally insane they are generally sent immediately to a
high-security asylum or treatment center.  They stay there until they are
declared competent at which time they may still stand trial.

More often used as a tacit is a "temporary insanity" plea, but these are
even harder to pull off.  In a lot of cases they're just a last ditch effort
to avoid execution.

There is sane and there is sane.

The definition of legally sane is basically did she know here actions were
wrong, and can she help in her own defense.

Not very high standards, which is why so few cases are decided by a plea of
insanity. (Not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect).
