I believe it boiled down to this - she knew murder was wrong but
believed the children's deaths were necessary in order to save their
souls.

It really is pretty sad for her. Imagine waking up and realizing you
have done something like that and you were wrong. It's a shame there
is no such thing as "committed to a mental institution for life'... it
might have been more appropriate in her case. There was a lot of
evidence of mental abuse, but yet -- she and her husband had been
planning more children and if released she would no doubt have had
some more.

While I feel sorry for her, I do think that perhaps she indicates that
there is sometimes a case to be made for involuntary sterilization.

They didn't rule her sane - they just did not accept the insanity defense.  but
Texas Juries rarely will set someone like that free.  I happen to agree with
that as well, because society need protections from that type of person, and
mental institutions cannot be trusted to not set them free and medicating them
up the kazoo.

Jurors rejected Yates' insanity defense in March 2002 and found her guilty
of capital murder for the June 20, 2001, drownings of three of her five
  children

How on earth can they rule her sane?????
