I had a bad experience on a school field trip to Plimouth Plantation (a living history museum). In a backyard of one of the houses, a guy was trying to catch a chicken. Our class was encouraged to help him catch the chicken. In a wonderful diving snag, I grabbed both legs, and handed the chicken to the pilgrim. He casually swung it in a circle by its neck, killing it. I was horrified. Still get a little freaked out to this day thinking about it. I knew about death, I just hadn't participated before that day.

Perhaps it would be better if at some point during high school or
earlier, kids go through a complete tour of a slaughterhouse. It would
give them a good understanding of where their food comes from and the
responsibility we all share.
