Well look at what we all do for a living! We build technology infrastructure!
How valuable is that to America? Extremely valuable.
In fact, I will bring it right home for all of you. When I owned my
company, we were under constant price/margin pressure from companies from
outside the US doing work
at rates that were impossible to compete with. We sold quality, and Im
happy to say,
exhibited quality. However those offshore companies took big chunks out of
every IT
consulting shop I dealt with. These days, as you all probably know,
roughly 30 to 40 percent of IT consulting work is being done by offshore
companies.
Now, those offshore shops are going to slow down for reasons from
Xenophobia, to Patriotism from American buyers, to the fact that their
workers may just flee the country altogether. America has ALWAYS needed
programmers and systems people (not the wanna-be programmers, REAL
programmers and engineers). We will need them more than ever as we move
towards complete self sufficiency in the world community. We all know that
technology is going to play a big part in this new war.
We, my friends (those of you in America and the west), are the troops of
the technology battle that is inevitably going to be waged. Don't
worry.....get angry....get focused.....do what you do best, and you will be
doing what America needs you to do. Generating sites for eCommerce,
streamlining the American IT infrastructure, evaluating and strengthening
the security of your networks, and generally creating business where there
is none.
I look at the technology business in the US. A business that was sliding
into ruin (as we all have probably experienced). I see a group of people
who fueled the largest economic expansion this country has ever seen. I
see a group of people who, when properly focused, will be our economic
salvation.
So, okay. You might say, "Geezzz Gerry, laying it on a bit thick aren't
ya?" I just thought you all should be reminded of where you come from and
how you fit. And you all do. So sit down, clear your head, and program
that piece of code that you just can't get to work. Make it work. When
you do, you will have advanced our technology culture ever so slightly down
that road to dominance once again.
Okay......Im done.
