Yes they have allowed them to broadcast but with limitations. Cable tv operators have to take the onus of censoring "any abusive content". Since no one wants to do that, no cable tv operator is in a hurry to add it to their channel line-up.

Hi Dana,

Sorry for the slow reply, it's been a little busy here. Actually they are going to allow Al-Jazeera to broadcast here.

The ad thing was a little nuanced for those who haven't lived here for a while... It refers to the whole cultural sovereignty issue as well as the "CanCon" problem which is the law that requires that all radio and tv broadcasting contain a certain percentage of Canadian content.

I am not really versed in the legalities so I can't say a lot more except that the CRTC has come under fire recently from the Italian community in Toronto because it won't allow RAI to get a license to broadcast here (an Italian station) because we already have a local Italian-language station, while it is allowing Al-Jazeera to get one.

I don't have a problem with Al-Jazeera broadcasting, but the CRTC has struck me as another bloated bureaucracy for ages... Thankfully one of Martin's new cabinet ministers has proposed an overhaul of the CRTC. I think it's long overdue. Here's hoping they make some positive changes.

PS As for The National Post, that is the baby of recently financially troubled neocon newspaper mogul, Conrad Black. An interesting man and a pretty good rag, except for it's political bias. It's not a tabloid. The Globe has gone downhill and is getting more boring.
