And somewhere in Washington, enshrined in a manilla envelope, is a
study in black and white of my finger prints.

... some of you may not believe that songs can change the destiny of
nations ...

Some of you may be too young to know this, but Nixon was the president
of the United states, and he used to like to tape stuff. If you can
imagine a world before there was vcr's and cassette decks everywhere,
you can imagine a man who was trully ahead of his time. And everything
was fine until they started playin' back the tapes. But it wasn't so
much anything that was on the tapes that got the man in trouble so
much as it was what he had erased from the tapes. What he didn't want
people to know he was listenin' to.

... and I want you to know that I didn't think about that for a very
long time until one night I was thinking to myself. Arlo... how many
things in the world are 18 minutes and 20 seconds long? ... Well how
many things are exactly 18 minutes and 20 seconds long? It's probably
just a coincidence... but it's good enough for me...

I'm probably screwing that all up, but I love the later renditions
with the extra passage about Nixon. :)
