Apparently it's possible to have a series of small strokes which are
not readily diagnosed? Not sure. I have been following news stories on
the topic but not actively researching it. I started to add also that
this was Canada, which lags a bit behind medically, but actually the
great-aunt that that just died lived her entire life in the US, so
medical care rationing is not a factor.

I don't see any relation between a stroke and alzheimer's
disease....other than both affect the brain.

A stroke is a very well defined event, whereby a blockage prevents
essential oxygen from reaching parts of the brain, wrecking all sorts
of havoc.  Any dementia which results from this would be listed as
just another symptom of the underlying source: the stroke.

Alzheimer's can cause the same type of dementia, but it's source is
much more of a mystery, occurrs commonly without evidence of a stroke,
and continues to worsen until, ultimately, death occurrs.

I'm not familiar with the aluminium theory.

What about the theory that consumption of aluminum is a contributing
factor? Do you know what happened to that?

I have heard about the plaques too, but no definitive test... I have
been wondering about this as they are now advertising medications
which, they say, the sooner you take them the better.

So far Alzheimers in our family is limited to those two siblings,
meaning, it could be environmentally caused... or it could just be
that the following generation is not quite old enough to develop
symptoms :) Personally, I find it suspicious that they both died of
  stroke, which can cause dementia...
