article that lays it out pretty well:
http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/07/14/fundraiser.flap/
The exact quoteas reported by CNN was that the entertainers "conveyed the
heart and soul of our country." I've also seen this: "every performer
tonight... conveyed to you the heart and soul of our country." and this:
"Every performer tonight in their own way - either verbally or through their
music, through their lyrics - have conveyed to you the heart and soul of our
country."
(Personally I don't see any meaningful difference between the multiple
versions, but I believe the last one is the full one.)
I didn't take this to mean that they, themselves, were the "heart and soul"
but rather that they were relaying some message from "the heart and soul" -
wherever that may actually be. I've been to a rib place called "Heart and
Soul" but I doubt that's it. ;^)
Considering that I do believe that claiming that he believes "that they were
the heart and soul of America" was misrepresenting the statement.

Subject: RE: President's speech
I checked spinsanity.com but couldn't find any related
stories.
The night of the fund raiser at Radio City Music Hall
were Whoppi said things that got her fired from Slim
Fast, Kerry took the stage and praised the performers
as the "heart and soul" of America.
That's why Bush keeps saying Kerry believes the Heart
and Soul of America is in Hollywood.
Are they claiming Kerry never said that on stage that
night?
