You should probably already have set up a business account with your
state department of revenue. Whether you register as a sole
proprieter, corp, or LLC is up to you and what your state will allow
(not all states support LLC).

When you register, you can talk to them about what activities are
taxable and what aren't. There are some tricky issues depending on if
you create a finished product or not. But you probably will and that
means you probably will have to be charging taxes and reporting/paying
those taxes to the state.
