The original point of Kerry's statement was in regard to loopholes.  Because Bush was a minority owner of that lumber company he could, under the laws initiated by the Bush administration, be considered a small business owner.

  I'm not sure that having a small share in a timber company is the same as "owning" that company. Do you consider yourself the "owner" of every company in which you own some percentage of stock?

  Also, unless i've been misled, isn't Kerry the one who is quite a bit more well off financially than Bush?
