They are afraid of things that are different from them.

I've known people to be afraid of:

People of a different race
People who are handicapped.
People who have diseases. Whether they are catchable or not.
People who are powerful.
People who are poor.
People who are smart.

I also compare it to Northerners' intolerance of Southerners and vice
versa.
Snobby city peoples' intolerance of poor white trash.

They just can't comprehend difference.

Add what the their brains see when the term "gay" is mentioned, and it's
just too much for some people to handle.
It's easy to imagine a wife having sex with her husband. It's been the
norm for so many years. It's not easy to think otherwise if you've been
sheltered or led a life that did not include gay couples.

Add religion in there, where you have been taught to follow a certain
line of thinking, and now your brain is conditioned to accept only one
set of rules and conditions and FORGET about perhaps allowing other
schools of thought in there. Just not gonna happen.

Change is hard.

That's my opinion.
