I too am socially liberal and fiscally conservative.  I've come to the
conclusion that there never will be my prefect candidate because I harbor
some rather conflicting ideals.  No problem, I just prioritize what is most
important to me and work from there.

I kid with my friends that I only have about 10-15 more years of being a
Dem before I switch sides once my priorities change.  Heh.  Who knows.

Either way, you are correct.  We do disagree about Bush's effectiveness in
guiding the country out of recession.  I give him high marks.  But I do
agree that the heavy lifting is going to come.  It's a trade off for the
now vs the latter.  Do we accept economic chaos now and risk slipping into
a depression or do we fix the recession now, avoid depression, and then
face economic uncertainty later.  Well you can never avoid economic
uncertainty so that isn't a risk that can be controlled.  My risk vs reward
matrix clearly states we fix now.  Perhaps Bush was the right person to get
us out of recession and maybe someone else is the right person to correct
our future?

But of course if we just simply take fate as being unavoidable why try in
the first place?  So the question is did Bush take actions that were
fundamentally sound?  I don't know.  There is a way to reduce
deficit.  It's to cut spending.  But we can't be so gung-ho about it.  Say
you wanted  to lose weight.  I've been told that cutting off a limb or two
is quite effective at reducing your body weight.  But there is a cost to
such drastic measures.  Namely the body you tried to reduce weight of isn't
worth reducing body weight for.  You get my point.

I think Bush did a good job.  We disagree about that.  I'm unconvinced that
he is the right person for our economic future though.  We do seem to agree
about that.
