The real question to ask here is who in the CIA leaked these
documents? There is a faction in the CIA that clearly wants the
President to fail and is actively trying to undermine the
Administration in it's efforts in Iraq. This is shameful and possibly
criminal behavior and the people responsible for it should be fired
and jailed. Their efforts are helping the enemy in Iraq and no amount
of rationalizing as to freedom of speech or right to free press
justifies the fact that they are working against the elected leader of
the United States.
The President gets briefings of all sorts all the time. Why is it that
these reports are being leaked now? The people responsible for the
leak do not have the best interests of the country at heart, they are
only interested in providing ammunition for partisan attacks against
the President. Of course there were assessments about all kinds of
possible outcomes in Iraq- it is the job of the intelligence community
to produce those assessments. They would have zero credibility if they
only produced rosy scenarios. The Democrats act like the existence of
these reports is some dark secret that the President is hiding, but
that's just an election-eve pose.
