IE DOM problem

I have a problem with the IE DOM model I can't seem to work around: http://spike.oli.tudelft.nl/jochemd/test/richtables.html

Currently a workaround is implemented to make sure IE fails with some grace, but if you take out line 108 and 109 you will see what really goes wrong. Any suggestions?
