I think what he meant was that those things he did could be classified
in the same group as the things he'd heard from others.

For example, let's say people are talking about PCs and everyone has a
Dell or HP while you have a Alienware.  A complete novice asks, "Do
you have a Mac or is yours like theirs?"  You reply, "it's the same
kind as theirs."

What that means is that while yours isn't the exact same type of PC,
it could be classified in the same group and so, for the novice, you
simplify your answer.

I don't mean any offense, but isn't that obvious to you?
