I'm of 2 minds here.
Mind one:
We should fix some of our own issues before sending troops and cash to other
places. Trust in the UN to provide for the children of Iraq under Sadam.
Trust in the UN to provide for the children of Sudan under the Arab gangs.
Trust in the UN to halt Iran's quest for a nuke and a long range launch
platform. Stop funnling our money into the UN as it's needed here. Trust in
the EU to handle trade problems. Trust that others will handle the problems.
Mind two:
All of the above is great except that the UN is a farse, the EU is out to
help France and Germany followed by europe (in that order) and most people
just don't care about the human rights abuse of others. If we don't say/do
something, no one will. Look at Sudan (again) and tell me that the UN did
anything before we brought it up. Tell me that anything is being done now.
And why not? Because all resolutions on stopping the genocide there (and it
truly is) is being blocked by other countries for their own interests, not
the interests of the innocent.

Yes, we have to take care of our own and we REALLY have to, but we can't
ignore the world.
