I have a possibly boring abridged story about that beer and why it's in the US.

Some entrepreneurs wanted sell a new light beer in the States so they
spent a lot of money developing the best tasting light beer they could
make and sold it under the Sam Adams Light label (the developers and
owners of SA were MBA buddies).

In blind taste tests Sam Adams Light always won but Amstel Light, the
constant loser, always outsold it even after the tasters found out
they liked SA Light better. Sam Adams continued selling the beer (I
think it's still out there).

The entrepreneurs learned a lesson: they found out the reason people
liked Amstel Light better was because it sounded foreign and people
associated that with quality - even when they knew it was a worse
tasting beer! (e.g., Corona, Red Stripe)

So they bought the rights to cheapest swill they could find that
wasn't in the US, but sounded foreign - Stella Artois.
