Success!

I used the Symantec site to walk through contacting support. It uses
an ActiveX widget to collect Ghost version info (only works with IE),
then a form to fill out explaining the problem (only works with IE),
then it gives a priority number and tells you to call the support
phone number which will cost $30.

I called anyway, punched in my priority number, waited for about on
hour, got a person who asked for my priority number again(overseas
tech support), he looked at my information I had filled out and he
didn't ask for the credit card. He just gave me a new serial number
that worked.

I'll only have to do this all over again when I upgrade my machine
since it's the same deal as Windows Product Activation.

Activation is supposed to save the industry billions, but it's really
just transferring costs. I just spent half a day plus an hour on the
phone trying to get this thing installed. Multiply that by the
installed base of software that uses activation (MS, Symantec,
Macromedia, etc.) and the costs are mind boggling! Even if only 10% of
people have problems, there is still a substantial amount of
collateral costs incurred by lateral support structures whether it's
the geek in the next cubicle or the in-house help desk getting called
in to help figure out what's wrong. And most of the costs are deferred
time bombs since the first install will generally go smoothly but it's
the hardware upgrade that causes it to rear its head.
