We are indeed wired for pattern recognition. But there is also very
deep sociological programming for it, particularly in the "west". You
could look at the biblical charge to Adam to  name all the creatures
and depending on how you read it, the naming gave Adam power over them
all. Contrast that with Zen Buddhism that is less about controlling
and labelling and more about accepting things as they come.
