However, these are not reasons enough for a preemptive strike against a country. They are not reason enough to go to war.
This is why the 'Stockpiles of WMD' and 'active chemical and biological programme' was used instead. I suppose some people will be comfortable thinking that they were lied to, but it was for a 'greater good' because otherwise Bush would not have gotten the support from America or elsewhere that he needed to go to war. The thing is, that you could never know for certain what would happen after sanctions were lifted. I am of the opinion that there would still have been an active inspections program, and if there were non compliance with that program then military force may have been more accepted and understood. Some people think that such actions may be grounds for impeachment, and sets a dangerous trend for future decisions and communicae by that Administration. Some people choose not to blindly trust that their government have their best interest at heart without any checks and balances. Some people like the founding fathers of America, that knew the dangers of a government unchecked all too well. What good does it do us to let Saddam create a weapons program later, if Iraq held up its end of the bargain then the UN sanctions would be lifted, allowing saddam to acquire the materials needed to create the bad weapons, and allowing him to create those weapons. It would have also kept the oil for food programming from functioning at all, regardless of the corruption it had, it still did help. While he may not have actually had the WMD, it is clear he was going to attempt to acquire them as soon as the sanctions were lifted, this is not something I think the US could have let happen. That isn't to say I condone the administrations tactics for gaining public support for the war, or that I think the President out and out lied, as there is no evidence to support that Bush knew there were no weapons.
