1. NOT everyone knows that. The average consumer walking into the
store and just buying a neat looking game is going to get screwed with
this release. Hell, even avid gamers are having difficulty getting it
running.

2. Many people don't have internet connections at home for one reason
or another. But they still have an offline computer which they play
games on.

3. Many people use laptops for gaming that may: 1) not have a
connection; and/or 2) not have an optical drive in at all times.

My father likes to play video games. He likes to go to the store, pick
up something that looks interesting, install it and start playing. But
as far as technical prowess, he's not going to upgrade his own video
card. And he has little tolerance for crap that doesn't just work.
Having to wait an hour for a game to "authenticate" after it's taken
forever to install would probably give him another heart attack.
Dealing with Steam is something that would probably make him go
postal.

Steam was designed explicitly for the purpose of cutting out the
middle man and making them money. It is about as anti-consumer as you
can get. Forcing even the CD/DVD version of the game to have to
authenticate against it is just like sticking a fork in the eye to jam
that point home. And on top of that, Vivendi's disk protection scheme
that doesn't let people run off of legal disk images is more blatant
anti-consumer crap.

But fortunately, there are cracks which allow a person to get around
all those problems. And if you've noticed, I've said every time that I
absolutely do intend to buy it. I just want to make sure that when I
hand over the money, I'm not bending over too.
