Ken I read through the first half of your text and I stopped because that is not how the calculate holdem odds. According to my stats, I played over a million hands in a span of about 4 months, The last time I checked my stats was about 6 months ago. So I'm pretty sure that I have played millions and millions of hands. I have also read about 7 different poker books.
There are two ways to calculate holdem odds. One is using straight probability. The other is using enumeration. Because I only took calc 1 and linear alegra in college I don't know how to enumerate anything other then a collection. I use straight probability because it's easier to do in the head and the results seem accurate enough. http://teamfu.freeshell.org/poker_odds.html I didn't read through all his stuff but I read through his other stuff and he seems to get the basics correctly. The part that you added that you can't really quant measure is called game theory. The classic example is two thieves are caught and put into separate rooms. The police commissioner sends a cop to each thief and offers him immunity if he gives up the other. But here is the catch. The thieves have 2 choices; he can shut up or he can talk. If he talks and the other guy shuts up, he goes free and the other guy goes to jail. If he talk and the other guy talks, they both go to jail. If he shuts up and the other guy talks, he goes to jail. So you have to do what is best for you but come to your decision on what he is likely to do. I shouldn't say it can't be measured because it sort of can be. This is actually very very powerful math. PS you shouldn't assume people won't play 7-2. I was at Foxwoods 3 weeks ago playing 10-20 holdem. Some idiot calls 2 bets cold with 9-T offsuite. The BB raises it and I cap it on the button. He calls 2 bets cold again. I have Aces and flop an over pair with the nut flush draw because 3 clubs are on the board. To make a long story short he calls 3 bets with top pair and then hits runner runner to make a 4 of a kind. What garbage. Then again, I should have realized the only thing smaller then his IQ would be his penis size because he was wearing at least 5 different Red Sox gear. I also saw someone raise with 5-6 from early position at the 20-40 game at the Bellagio. Oh wait, that was me. Never mind. -- 2004 - The year $184M couldn't buy a pennant.
