I used to think I'd like to be an artist who could write, but now
That's what really nearly killed Marvel in the 80's. They made absolute rock stars out of their artists and tended to ignore their writers (who often bounced from company to company to compensate and were never allowed any ownership or creative freedom over their characters). So what happened? All of these ego-blown artists went off and create "Image". The name was so completely apt because all of these guys were great artists and some of them even had decent ideas, but none of them could actually WRITE! I think that's why I originally because much more interested in DC rather than Marvel. (I began my comics hobby almost exclusively on Manga - especially VIZ's excellent prestige format books - I moved to some Dark Horse and other indies via "Dirty Pair" and "Outlanders" and the very first DC book I ever read was "Justice, Inc." - once Hellblazer hit the stands I was completely hooked). DC has always seemed to value its writers more and allow them just a little more freedom. > in my old, old age of 28, I'm sure I'd want to be a writer who could draw. > (That's where Frank Miller used to take the cake, I'm not sure who does > nowadays.) There are a few, but Miller's still up there. Paul Chadwick is by far my personal favorite, but his stuff comes out way too rarely.
