That about does it with the addition of non-volatile storage (HD, disc,
memory card, etc).

Personally I also look at the controller and ports available. I rarely play
multiplayer so I didn't mind only two controller ports on the PS2, but the
lack of an IR port was annoying. Also, now that the Eyetoy has become such
an important part of the system, I really hope they have to brains to mount
a USB port on the BACK of the damn thing.

What I'd really like to see is packed in wireless controllers, but I think
they'll probably stick to the tethers to save costs.

I also greatly prefer front loading discs and flat tops for stacking. At
the same time I see no reason why we're still stuck with one disc - simple
changers are peanuts now, the only potential issue is space. But still, I'd
really like to have three or five games loaded at once.

Lastly I'm getting REALLY sick of chintzy memory cards - I want at least 128
meg of RAM, preferably more. I would also REALLY like to see at least some
(say 8meg) of internal non-volatile storage for system settings (network
settings, etc) and not have to place such a file on every memory card.

But most importantly it's all about the games. ;^)

In that arena we're going to see some interesting movement I think. When
the XBox came out it was a massive uphill battle to gain developer support
(it still is in Japan). But with this one both Sony and MS already have the
support of some of the best and brightest going in.

I hope this means that both consoles better software out of the gate. In
the past the first generation of a console's software is almost impressive
to spite itself - it's rarely the best software that the console can do
(look at "Jak and Daxter" which was actually a very good looking game vrs
"Jak 3" which just blows it away on the same exact hardware).

At the same time both companies are pretty radically changing their
platforms so it's unclear how much of the current expertise can be
transferred.
