Buy a decent guitar - whether you start with acoustic or electric is up to
you. Acoustic is more difficult but gets you in to good habits early,
whereas electric is simpler to learn and can be more satisfying.

I would recommend that you go to a local music store and pick up a basic
introduction book from Hal Leonard (it's a publishing company). Schools use
Hal Leonard a lot because it's excellent instruction; in addition, there are
sometimes accompanying DVDs that go over the same content. That's probably
your best starting point.

Do you have a Guitar Center near you? I find that they tend to have very
knowledgeable and helpful employees. I've received nothing but good advice
from them :)

HTH,
Dave
