There are mods for everything, but at least for the PS2 you can usually get away with not needing them. I use, for example, a software solution called "HD Advance" that allows me to use non-standard hard drives up to 200 Gig to store most games (not all, but most) on the drive directly. You can, if you're so inclined rent games and save them or download games from the net and copy them manually to the hard drive (by removing it and hooking it up to a computer). That's a real pain in the ass however. The major issue with MODs on the PS2 (whether hardware or software) is Sony digital protection software - it'll check for a modded box and not allow network connectivity if it sees one. Using HD Advance this means I still need the disc in the drive to play online.
