In Atlanta, it's interesting to me that folks who live out in the
outer suburbs see the city as choked with traffic. It's really not.
The burbs are, and the freeways in and out of the city certainly are,
but inside the city, traffic's really bad at all.

I lived in Midtown Atlanta for several years and could get just about
anywhere I needed to in 5-10 minutes. I've also lived in Lilburn,
Stone Mountain, Peachtree City, and Norcross (all burbs of Atlanta),
and can tell you each of those had TONS more traffic problems, both on
the surface streets and on the freeways. And, as you mention, forget
about ever trying to go into the city, it's hellish to get through the
traffic during rush hour and sometimes during the middle of the day.

Living in Midtown gave me access to tons more stuff to do,
restaurants, bars, clubs, parks, music and sports venues. Much of it
I could walk to, and the stuff I couldn't walk to was a $5 cab ride
away. Most weekends I parked my car on Friday night and didn't drive
it again till it was time for my 5 minute commute to work.

I know that there's definitely a difference between OTP (outside the
perimeter) and intown people in Atlanta. I'm always amazed however,
at the misperceptions that people who live way out in the suburbs have
of the city. There's so much sprawl in Atlanta, and living in the
middle of the sprawl is what creates the problems that people tend to
observe and attribute to "the city". The center of the city is really
quite well developed and is densely populated enough that traffic
isn't really a problem because you don't have to drive so far to get
to anything, if at all.

Living in the burbs means getting into a car to do ANYTHING. Going to
the grocery store, a restaurant, your job, everything requires travel
in a car. These are all things I could find within walking distance
intown, and if I did have to get into a car, it was for a very short
period of time.

Anyways. I doubt I am going to shift anyone's viewpoints here, just
thought I would go off on a rant about Atlanta for a minute. :)
