they had a discovery channel show on last night about tidal waves, and they
said the size of the wave is limited (with regards to quake caused waves) to
the amount of plate shift that occured during the quake. Apparently the two
sizes are directly related.

Whereas the most massive tidal waves that they talked about happened as a
result of huge landslides. One in a bay in alaska measured over 500 feet
high. I kid you not. more than ten times as high as the indian ocean ones,
although this happened in a bay, so the effects were magnified i guess.

did anyone else watch this?

Even if you take a supertanker and fill it with TNT, succeed in sinking it
without breaking it into pieces and detonating it you still have only about
400 kiloton. It is going to cause serious damage if you do that in New York
harbour, but then it will be a shock wave and not a tidal wave because there
isn't enough water there for a tidal wave.
If you do it offshore, people will just see a pretty mushroom cloud :-)
